{"id":575,"date":"2009-09-28T08:36:02","date_gmt":"2009-09-28T08:36:02","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2016-08-09T18:13:10","modified_gmt":"2016-08-09T18:13:10","slug":"fact-sheet-states-with-high-rate-of-union-monopoly-bargaining-suffering-a-horrific-lost-decade","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nrtw.org\/es\/blog\/fact-sheet-states-with-high-rate-of-union-monopoly-bargaining-suffering-a-horrific-lost-decade\/","title":{"rendered":"Fact Sheet: States with High Rate of Union Monopoly Bargaining Suffering a Horrific \u00abLost Decade\u00bb"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\nLast week, the pro-worker think tank <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nilrr.org\/\">National Institute for Labor Relations Research<\/a> (NILRR) <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nilrr.org\/node\/96\">released<\/a> a Fact Sheet entitled \u201cNegative Employment Growth Since November 2001\u201d that details how highly-unionized states are suffering a &quot;lost decade&quot; in terms of private-sector job growth, while the least-unionized states have benefited from a nearly 1.5 million private-sector job growth:\n<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\n\tAs of 2001, the year of the last national recession prior to the current one, 9.7% of private-sector employees nationwide were under \u201cexclusive\u201d union representation.  But in 16 states \u2013 Alaska, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, Nevada, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania,. Washington, West Virginia and Wisconsin \u2013 11.0% or more of private-sector workers were unionized.\n\t<\/p>\n<p>\n\tFrom November 2001, the trough of the last recession, through June 2009, the most recent month for which non-preliminary, state-by-state payroll jobs data are available at this writing, these 16 heavily unionized states suffered an aggregate private-sector job loss of 990,000 \u2013 or 2.2% of their November 2001 total.  Ten of the 16 states, or nearly two-thirds, had fewer private-sector jobs in June 2009 than they had had nearly eight years earlier.\n\t<\/p>\n<p>\n\t&#8230;\n\t<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThe overall job losses in states with average private-sector unionization were far smaller than in heavily unionized states, and the 16 states which had private-sector unionization of 6.0% or less in 2001 actually gained jobs.\n\t<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThese low union-density states are: Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, Utah and Virginia.  They gained an aggregate of nearly 1.5 million private-sector jobs from November 2001 through June 2009.  That constitutes a 4.5% increase.\n\t<\/p>\n<p>\n\tEven with recent setbacks taken into account, fifteen of the 16, or 94%, of the lowest union-density states have experienced net job gains since November 2001.\n\t<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\nPutting aside the inherent abuse of workers&#8217; rights, the data <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nilrr.org\/node\/96\">clearly indicates<\/a> that job growth is negatively impacted by Big Labor&#8217;s government-granted monopoly bargaining special privileges.\u00a0 Yet NILRR&#8217;s findings should come to no surprise to regular <a href=\"\/blog\">Freedom@Work<\/a> readers, as we <a href=\"\/blog\/big-labors-bankrupting-agenda-07012009\">reported<\/a> recently:\n<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<blockquote><\/blockquote>\n<p>\n\tNILRR <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nilrr.org\/node\/89\">recently found<\/a> an especially strong correlation between a state\u2019s Right to Work status and its job growth, while employees in Right to Work states <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nilrr.org\/node\/85\">are benefiting<\/a> from faster job growth and higher real purchasing power than their compulsory unionism counterparts.\n\t<\/p>\n<blockquote><\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\nHistory clearly demonstrates how union monopolists have hindered the creation of new jobs with costly operating procedures and wasteful work rules, <a href=\"\/en\/blog\/how-make-economy-02182009\">especially during times of financial hardship<\/a>.\u00a0  Meanwhile, union bosses use their monopoly bargaining and other <a href=\"\/en\/d\/big_labor_special_privileges.htm\">special forced-dues privileges<\/a> to fill their political coffers while proliferating <a href=\"\/en\/stranglehold-0\">Big Government-mandated<\/a> regulations on job providers and higher taxes on employers and employees alike.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\nLast week, the pro-worker think tank <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nilrr.org\/\">National Institute for Labor Relations Research<\/a> (NILRR) <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nilrr.org\/node\/96\">released<\/a> a Fact Sheet entitled \u201cNegative Employment Growth Since November 2001\u201d that details how highly-unionized states are suffering a &quot;lost decade&quot; in terms of private-sector job growth, while the least-unionized states have benefited from a nearly 1.5 million private-sector job growth:\n<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\n\tAs of 2001, the year of the last national recession prior to the current one, 9.7% of private-sector employees nationwide were under \u201cexclusive\u201d union representation.
