The powerful Service Employees International Union (SEIU) <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2009\/03\/18\/AR2009031800709.html?hpid=topnews\">recently fired 75 staffers<\/a>. But why is an organization that collects hundreds of millions of dollars in easy money (forced dues)\u00a0per year cutting jobs now, in the midst of a devastating economic recession? Simple &#8211; they want even more cash for political lobbying:\n<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div align=\"left\">\n\t<\/div>\n<p align=\"left\">\n\t&quot;It&#8217;s completely hypocritical,&quot; said staff union President Malcolm Harris&#8230;\n\t<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>\n\tHarris said his union&#8217;s understanding is that the layoffs are the result of budget troubles faced by SEIU, which, on top of the California dispute, spent $80 million during the 2008 election and is planning to spend tens of millions more to advocate on behalf of Obama&#8217;s health-care plan and card check.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\nThe entire sordid episode is sadly reminiscent of <a href=\"\/en\/blog\/right-work-podcast-episode-2-big-labors-polit-10242008\">the SEIU&#8217;s election-year shenanigans<\/a>, when the union hierarchy threw in the towel on the notion of hands-on employee assistance,\u00a0replacing a help line with a remote call center &#8212; the goal being to\u00a0free up even more\u00a0resources for political campaigning.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nAnd now, yet again, SEIU bosses are demonstrating that they are more concerned with politics and forced-dues dollars than looking out the working man.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n(Via <a href=\"http:\/\/corner.nationalreview.com\/post\/?q=ODFkNjcxNDM0YjAzYzk3YzZjNGRhZGQyZWUzZjVkNTY=\"><i>National Review<\/i><\/a>)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\nHere at <i>Freedom@Work<\/i>, we spend a lot of time documenting union bosses&#8217; shameless hypocrisy, but this latest incident (almost) surprised even us.
