Across the country, teacher union bosses have been pushing their preferred political causes and candidates and the <a href=\"http:\/\/elections.foxnews.com\/2008\/10\/02\/virginia-teachers-union-sparks-outrage-obama-blue-day\/\">result<\/a> is the disturbing politicization of the classroom.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nToday, the <i>Washington Times<\/i> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/news\/2008\/oct\/02\/teachers-union-e-mail-touting-obama-draws-backlash\/\">reported<\/a> that union brass of the Virginia Education Association Union (VEA), an affiliate of the National Education Association Union (NEA), sent an e-mail to Virginia teachers which:\n<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\n\t&#8230;encouraged members to bring politics into the classroom by wearing blue in support of Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama and simultaneously suggested that the union&#8217;s voter registration efforts include those &quot;you teach.&quot;\n\t<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\nMeanwhile, the<i> New York Post <\/i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nypost.com\/seven\/10022008\/news\/regionalnews\/teachers_get_hit_on_the_button_131776.htm\">reported<\/a> today that teacher union bosses in New York have been &quot;handing out thousands of Barack Obama campaign buttons&quot; to teachers. However, as the Post notes, \u201cthe Department of Education\u2026 has a long-standing policy barring teachers from wearing political campaign buttons in schools.\u201d The teacher union bosses in New York said they will appeal the Department\u2019s decision. The <i>Post <\/i>quoted Department of Education spokeswoman Ann Forte as saying:\n<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\n\tSchools are not a place for politics and not a place for staff to wear political buttons\u2026 We don&#8217;t want a school or school staff advocating for any political position or candidate to students and we don&#8217;t want students feeling intimidated because they might hold a different belief or support a different candidate than their teachers.\n\t<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\nIndeed. But what about the teachers that don&#8217;t support the union bosses&#8217; chosen candidate? They too should not be subjected to union officials&#8217; politicking. In the <a href=\"\/rtws.htm\">28 states<\/a> that do not have Right to Work laws (including New York), union officials are notorious for extracting forced union dues to <a href=\"\/d\/political_spending.htm\">fund<\/a> political pet projects that teachers often oppose.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nUnfortunately, most teachers are not even aware of <a href=\"\/about-your-legal-rights-public-school-teacher-or-college-professor\">their rights<\/a> to refrain from contributing to Big Labor\u2019s political pet projects as <a href=\"\/foundation-won-supreme-court-precedents\">established<\/a> by Foundation-won Supreme Court cases. However, while our work is cut out for us, there is hope.
