July 5th marked the 73rd <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/news\/nationworld\/chi-almanac_7-5-08jul05,0,6197363.story\">anniversary<\/a> of the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Labor_Relations_Act\">National Labor Relations Act<\/a>. This legislation, originally enacted in 1935, imposes union officials as middlemen between management and workers. While reformers thought they were curtailing the\u00a0worst excesses\u00a0with the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Taft-Hartley\">Taft-Hartley Amendment<\/a>s in 1947, the NLRA\u00a0continued to give government backing to\u00a0Big Labor&#8217;s monopoly bargaining privileges while actually\u00a0increasing\u00a0the government force behind\u00a0an immoral policy of forcing workers to pay dues for often\u00a0unwanted union &quot;representation.&quot;\n<\/p>\n<p>\nHere&#8217;s a good <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mackinac.org\/article.aspx?ID=2306\">primer<\/a> on the NLRA&#8217;s evolution from Michigan&#8217;s Mackinac Center for Public Policy.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n2.) <i>Reason<\/i> Magazine has a good <a href=\"http:\/\/reason.com\/blog\/show\/127343.html\">post<\/a> up on the racially-charged history of mandatory collective bargaining. Here&#8217;s the money quote:\n<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\n\tThe NAACP&#8217;s publication <i>The Crisis<\/i>, for example, decried the monopoly powers granted to racist unions by the NRA, noting in 1934 that &quot;union labor strategy seems to be to obtain the right to bargain with the employees as the sole representative of labor, and then close the union to black workers.&quot;\n\t<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\nInstitutional union racism continues to this very day.\u00a0 And it is aided and abetted by Big Labor&#8217;s monopoly\u00a0bargaining privileges which give union officials inordinate power over employees&#8217; livelihood.\u00a0 It is all too common for union\u00a0bosses to retaliate against employees for any arbitrary reasons, including race.
