The media is reporting that the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has agreed to a contract with American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) union bosses that governs some of your terms and conditions of employment with TSA.
Even though all security screeners will be covered by that contract, there is NO requirement that any security screener join the AFGE union or pay a cent of dues to that union. Click here to learn more about your rights as a federal government employee.
The Foundation wishes to remind all security screeners that it is your free choice to join the AGFE union or not. We want you to know your rights. You should know that union membership and dues deductions are strictly voluntary in the federal sector. You should also know that dues check off agreements (by which employees authorize TSA to withhold money from their salary and give it to AFGE) are legally binding contracts. READ THE FINE PRINT CAREFULLY! If you sign such a dues check off agreement, you will only be able to revoke it once-a-year via cumbersome procedures, during very short window periods. Most unions do not explain this "fine print" to employees, and employees are often pressured into signing such agreements in haste. You should know that it is illegal for union bosses to pressure, harass or coerce any federal employee into signing such a dues deduction agreement, or threatening that the employee will get "lesser representation" if they do not sign such a card.
