I'm from Southern Illinois. There was a book written I read about 20 years ago called "Bloody Williamson Country"; Paul Angle wrote about the Soviet infiltration of the United Mine Workers as early as the 1920. The Soviets were hired by the coal companies because of the Bolshevik Revolutionaries were experts in strike breaking.

In 1922 the Herrin Massacre occurred and 19 scab laborers were killed by UMW members.
