In NY, state and public employees are not forced to join the union but they take dues anyway and call them shop dues. Is this legal? Part of the money is used for political purposes and is used to promote candidates the union officers want. In fairness, if you dare, you can ask for the part of your dues that is used for political purposes back. The process is a lot of trouble and most workers are afraid to ask for fear of retaliation.
