To If it were not for unions:

I think you meant to say: If it were not for unions, America could be productive and competitive because workers who are efficient and work hard would be rewarded while slugs would be unemployed. Educated hard workers would be paid according to their skill instead of their seniority.

Also, I do not think you know the definition of socialism. Unions prefer socialism, republicans prefer free-market, free-speech democracy.
