Union Member Writes to NRTW, "I Don't Dare Sign This Letter"

This week, the National Right to Work Foundation received an anonymous letter from an American worker who has been a union member for 30 years and recently came around to supporting the Right to Work principle after witnessing horrific union boss corruption and government bailouts of forced unionism.

But after watching the auto industry go through bankruptcies and then STILL seeing the same corrupt practices go on, I feel like I am getting screwed TWICE!  Once as a taxpayer and once as a dues paying union member!

...

In Right to Work states, union dues are paid only by those members who feel like they are being represented.  That would make the unions honest and do their jobs like they are paid to!

...

I don't dare sign this letter.  The retaliation would cost me my job, my safety and my sanity!

I am not alone, there are many that feel this way but are too scared to speak up.

This anonymous writer offers a good reminder of what the Right to Work principle is all about -- true freedom in the workplace.  Read the full letter here.

Response to This is a Great Idea

I do not work for a union, never have and never will. I have worked in companies where there was union representation. This much I can say for sure - unions were necessary at one time in our history. They are no longer relevant and useful. The unions do not promote efficiency and ultimately drag a company down into bancruptcy or force them to move overseas. When an uneducated employee can make as much or more than engineers, financial people etc. it shows how out of balance that kind of system is. I talked to OEM manufacturing companies in Right to work states like Alabama. There non union employees are paid better, share in company profits etc so they have an incentive to be more productive making the company more profitable and thus increasing their own wealth. Unions only goal is to keep themselves strong and punish business. All you have to do is look at the statistics of thousands of companies. Their latest push for card check is to try an re-invigorate their dwindling ranks (and coffers).

Right To Work Posts

Hey Bob,

I notice that you do not respond with facts or reasoned arguments supporting your position. You seem to prefer insults and hyperbole. Is this becuase you are unfamiliar with logic, and therefore cannot reason, or are you simply ignorant of the facts and therefore cannot cite any?

Either way, you would avoid much damage to your cause and reputation by not posting your comments. Just, FYI.

Right to Work???????

I am a union worker, I live in a Right to Work state. Though it is true I can refuse to pay union dues if I so choose. The Union can't stop me from working. However if all of the rank and file of the local union does not go along and refuse to pay union dues. Those that do refuse to pay will have their seniority rights frozen. What that will do is move you down the seniority roster. As each member younger than you comes up to your seniority date they will pass you. The net effect of this action will at some point keep you from working, because your seniority will not allow you to hold a job. You will find yourself on the layoff list as well if your seniority gets you close enough to the bottom of the seniority roster. I don't know of all labor contract situations, I do know that if you loose seniority in the union I am in you won't get it back. I don't suport card check and DON'T think unions are good for this country. I think if we as a nation don't start doing some things that suport business we are going to find ourselves without any jobs (union or otherwise).

There you go again with your

There you go again with your down right LIE!
You are not or ever have been a union member, or you would know
That Is A Flat Out LIE! POS

resigned from union

I am an employee in a state that is not a right to work state. I work a SEIU union job for a major college. I've been a steward, employee activist and an overall pain in the but of both my employer and the union. My employer violated the fair wage laws as well as our contract. When the employees and I responded to the violations with our legal and contractual rights the employer responded with harassment and cohesion. The support of our union was inadequate and appeared to be clandestine. They let a labor violation expire, refused to take grievances to arbitration and did not respond to the harassment and cohesion from management. The union is more interested in building their customer base and less interested in servicing the customers they already have. After the suicide of a coworker, the lack of support from the union and the fact that I do not agree with their politics. I resigned as the shop steward and in April sent a letter provided by your web site resigning from the union. I then in May sent a second letter objecting to the service fee I was required to pay. After a phone call in July to the union complaining about the lack of a response, I received a letter that gave no information on what the service fee is based on. And I'll add that my dues have not reflected the service fee to this date. I'm at a loss of what to do next.

P.S.
My coworkers are egger to see how I make out.
